Pantone have announced their colours of the year for 2021. It’s a departure from the norm as they have announced two colours not the usual one. Last year it was a perfect classic blue. I do have a soft spot for a good blue. However, for 2021, they have decided on two colours – a pale grey and an optimistic yellow. I am quite surprised at this really as grey paired with lemon and orange seem to have been a thing for a while now. I like them both and they do look good together. Their official names are ultimate grey and illuminating and they do provide a ‘message of positivity supported by fortitude’. The reaction to them hasn’t been altogether positive with some suggestions that the grey is reminiscent of urban decay and the yellow of hi-vis vests.
I like to see how colours work in nature and it seems that the lovely grey wagtail has already decided that combination works. We frequently see these flitting about the beck on our daily walks.

I’m not sure I’ll be running out to buy anything in these colours, but a very pale grey does always look classy. The problem with any grey fabric is that if you’re not careful it just looks like it’s been through the washing machine too many times. A very pale lace shawl, wrap or blanket would be nice though?
It’s interesting that they have chosen two. I find it interesting that in the knitting world, ‘grellow’ has been popular for a while. We are just humble trendsetters. I love the name ‘wagtail’!
